Rural fairs, southern Portugal

Garvonesas nearly became extinct in the 1990s with only 80 animals left. They were then subject to a conservation project and slowly they rose in number to the present estimate of 500. Typical of the Alentejo, Portugal, they are historical draught animals and are now subject to a second conservation project involving genetic studies and crossing the least related animals.
