Lesser Kestrels are much dependent on agricultural activities. In Portugal, there were only about 150 couples left in 1996. Thanks to a Life project implemented by the League for the Protection of Nature from 2002-2006 there are now an estimated 550 breeding pairs. The involvement of southern Portugal agricultural communities, by adopting more traditional farming methods, was crucial to the success of the project.
